Duke University Health System recently retained Spirit Consulting to provide expertise in hiring healthcare leadership within the Perioperative Services Department. Spirit Consulting will assist in bringing continued success for Duke’s Sterile Processing operations by searching for their next Director of Sterile Processing and Manager of Sterile Processing.

The Manager of Sterile Processing (MSP) will be a new position for the Sterile Processing Department at Duke Health.  He or she will be responsible for providing daily oversight of the operations for assigned Sterile Processing units—including two Sterile Processing Technicians and 90 other staff. In collaboration with the SPD Leadership, the MSP will develop and activate annual departmental strategic and operational plans. He or she will actively lead performance improvement, quality, and patient safety initiates associated with high level disinfection, sterilization, and instrumentation transport to ensure risk of environmental cross-contamination is minimized and health of staff is safeguarded. The Manager of Sterile Processing will serve as an expert on sterilization processes and systems and assures compliance with policies and procedures and all regulatory and accrediting agencies.

The position of Director of Sterile Processing (DSP) will be responsible for planning, directing and coordinating activities involved in the acquisition, decontamination, storage, assembly, cleaning and sterilization of medical, surgical and related supplies, materials and equipment utilized in the care and treatment of patients and the operation of the Duke University Hospital Sterile Processing Department.  He or she will report directly to the Assistant Vice President for Perioperative Services. The DSP will directly supervise two Managers of Sterile Processing, shift supervisors and the entire Sterilization Processing Department.  In total, the Director of Sterile Processing will be responsible for approximately 100 individuals in the Sterile Processing Department and 65 operating rooms plus other sites where the Sterile Processing Department does associated work.
